Fife says latest job numbers show the Ford government needs to step up right now with the supports small businesses need to survive

WATERLOO – Catherine Fife, NDP critic for Economic Growth and Job Creation, has issued a statement following Friday’s latest job numbers released by Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office (FAO):

“Over these incredibly difficult months, Ontarians have worried not only about their health, but their family’s financial health. Today’s numbers show that life isn’t getting any easier, and that the programs to help businesses keep staff on and pay the rent have missed the mark.

Once again we see that women are bearing the brunt of the economic pain. This continues to be a she-cession, with women continuing to lose their jobs at an even faster pace, with over 575,000 women being laid off in Ontario since February.

Each day we still hear from more small business owners across the province, including so many women entrepreneurs, who are being forced to shut their doors without the help they desperately need.

That’s why the Doug Ford government needs to stop passing the buck to the federal government. Ford needs to step up to offer real financial supports to workers and small businesses in Ontario, especially women, so they can get through the worst of this crisis and begin to re-build our economy once the pandemic is over.”
