Ontarians should not have to fight their government in court for transparency

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, has released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision on the Ford government’s 2018 mandate letters:

“Mr. Ford and the Conservatives feel that they do not owe the people of Ontario any transparency or accountability for their sketchy backroom decisions, even as they remain under RCMP criminal investigation. But it's clear that almost every decision that this Conservative government has made is in the interest of a select few of their friends – not the best interests of Ontarians.

This government wasted five years and huge amounts of taxpayer dollars to keep these documents secret. Not only did this government deny the public access to these letters, they took it all the way to the Supreme Court.

From the Greenbelt to ServiceOntario to Ontario Place, the Conservatives have never met a backroom deal they didn’t like. The Ontario NDP will continue to shine a light on this government’s shady backroom deals and corruption because Ontarians deserve a leader they can trust.”
